DON’T let your Christmas spirit be dampened by a festive spill.

As food and drinks are flowing, accidents can easily happen.

But follow these tips to quickly banish common stains — with minimum spend — and avoid ruined carpets and clothes.

RED WINE: This tipple is the biggest stain culprit at festive gatherings.

Always treat spillages as soon as possible, by first dabbing with a dry cloth to absorb any excess liquid. Don’t scrub at the stain.

Baking soda can be good for removing marks from the carpet — and you’re likely to already have a pot of it somewhere in your cupboards.

Mix a tablespoon with a little water to make a paste and gently apply to the stain. Once the paste has dried, you can vacuum it.

CANDLE WAX: Flickering candles create the perfect warm atmosphere.

But if wax spills on carpet or furniture, it can be tough to remove.

As soon as the wax is dry, scrape off as much as you can using a blunt utensil, such as a spoon, and be careful not to damage the fabric.

You’ll then need to remove the remaining wax by re-melting it.

Put a strong, thick piece of kitchen towel over the wax and, on the lowest possible heat, use an iron to go over the kitchen paper.

Just use the tip of the iron if you can. The heat will start to melt the wax into the kitchen paper.

Use fresh kitchen paper as the wax is absorbed into it.

GREASE: Spatters of cooking oil or gravy spills can leave pesky marks.

You should always treat stains from the “wrong side” of the fabric, according to cleaning brand Dr. Beckmann, and avoid using hot water which can set a stain.

A solution of white vinegar mixed equally with water can help lift grease from some fabrics.

Add the mixture to the stain, then use a clean cloth with water and soap to gently rub until removed.
