THREE out of ten Brits cancel pub visits as they cannot afford them amid the cost of living crisis, a poll found.

Some 29 per cent say they agree to see friends for a drink only to then make an excuse and bail on them to save cash.

Of those, more than one in ten — 13 per cent — are anxious about losing their job.

A survey found that women are most likely to fib after agreeing to a night out, with 37 per cent doing so compared to 20 per cent of men.

Folk from Cardiff are the most likely to come up with an excuse and blow out their muckers, with 34 per cent saying they now do so.

They are followed by people from Brighton, with 33 per cent, then Newcastle and Nottingham both on 32 per cent.

Drinkers from Bristol are the fourth-most likely not to turn up, with 31 per cent coming up with an excuse to stay in.

They are followed in fifth place by Belfast locals (30 per cent) with London and Manchester tied on 27 per cent, then Birmingham (26 per cent).

Least likely to cancel a pub visit with friends are people from Glasgow, Sheffield and Norwich — though 25 per cent still admit doing it.

Overall, 75 per cent of people said the state of the economy is their greatest concern.

Fifty-eight per cent said they are worried about household bills, according to a poll of 1,040 UK adults by Ikea.

A spokeswoman for the flat-pack furniture firm, Katie McCrory, said: “After years of lockdowns, now followed by the cost of living crisis, people will feel the need to stay at home again to save on costs.”
