Three in four drivers are given no explanation when their insurance claim is rejected, partially accepted or disputed, research reveals.

Insurers are leaving motorists in the dark over judgments, making it harder for unhappy policyholders to challenge or make a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, says consumer champion Which? .

Insurers may fall short of new rules by City watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority, aiming to improve ‘consumer understanding’ which come into force on July 31. 

Which? warns that insurers may fail to meet requirements given repeated failures to offer explanations in rejected cases.

The number of rejected car insurance claims jumped by 24 per cent between August and November last year, according to the FCA.
