APPLE’S new iPhones have tricks aplenty – so it’s hard to take them all in at once.

Here are three brilliant iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro features you might have missed from this week’s Apple event.

Action Mode

Video on iPhone never gets much attention, but it’s come on leaps and bounds in recent years.

Now Apple has introduced another big advancement: Action Mode.

This lets you capture “incredibly smooth” video, even if you’re walking, running or being carted along a bumpy road.

It works by capturing the full sensor – a wider image than usual – and then using the extra data to crop in.

There’s some extra computational trickery going on, but the result is a massive reduction of shaking, motion and vibrations on your shot.

So if you’re trying to capture the action, it’ll look Hollywood smooth. GoPro who?

Better yet, it’s available on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

Crash Detection

Crash detection is another feature coming to the entire line-up – iPhone 14 and 14 Pro.

It works by using the sensors in your iPhone (as well as GPS) to detect if you’re in a severe car crash.

And it will automatically dial emergency services if you’re unconscious and unable to reach your iPhone.

Apple said it tested the feature on an enormous dataset of crashes to make sure it’s working when it needs to.

It’s not for small bumps – so it shouldn’t activate during a low-speed collision in a car park, for instance.

“It was designed for severe, life-threatening, high-impact front and rear, side-swipe, T-bone and rollover crashes,” Apple explains.

It could be a real life-saver, though hopefully you’ll never need to see it in action.

The smartness of always on

Sadly this last feature is only available on the iPhone 14 Pro – but it’s very cool.

Apple has fitted the 14 Pro with an Always-On Display, so you can constantly see the time and latest info without having to tap the screen.

It couldn’t come at a better time, given the new iOS 16 update completely revamps the Lock Screen to allow for customisation and widgets.

So now the Lock Screen is more useful than ever – and Always-On makes it especially accessible.

But it’s a smart system that is designed to not put too much strain on your battery.

For instance, it will change brightness depending on the ambient light where you are.

And if you put it in your pocket – so the screen is completely covered – then the Always-On Display will turn off.

Apple has managed to preserve excellent colour accuracy with Always-On too, so your Lock Screen wallpapers shouldn’t look strange when the display is dimmed.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are available in the UK and US on Friday, September 16 – but can be pre-ordered now.
