FRUIT-picking is a fun activity that gets kids outdoors and teaches them where food comes from.
Now is the perfect time of year to hand-select delicious strawberries from the orchard.
Here are some ideas on how to use your yummy harvest . . .
FRESH FOR LONGER: Fruit-picking is a good-value day out.
It’s free to get in to many farms and you will only pay for food you gather.
Find a fruit field near you at pickyourownfarms.org.uk.
When you take home berries, put them in an airtight container lined with tissue to absorb excess moisture.
That will help the fruit last longer.
Or pop it straight into the freezer and use within six months.
Frozen berries are great in smoothies.

A BIT JAMMY: Mix up a big batch of jam.
First, sterilise jars and lids by placing them in boiling water for two minutes.
Use tongs to take them out and put them in a pre-heated oven on low to dry.
Remove the green stems from 1.2kg of strawberries and mix with 800g of jam sugar and the juice from a lemon.
Leave covered with clingfilm for two hours, then mash the fruit into smaller pieces.
Heat the mixture until the sugar has dissolved and the liquid has turned glossy, then boil for four minutes using a timer
Ladle it into jars and top with a circle of greaseproof paper before sealing tightly with a lid.
Store it in the fridge and use within three months (recipe adapted from Tesco Real Food).
STRAWBERRY DAIQUIRI: This is a gorgeous summer cocktail.
Cut the stalks off the fruit and throw in a mixer to blend.
If you want to remove excess seeds, push it through a sieve.
Mix the puree with a handful of ice, the juice from half a lime and a couple of spoonfuls of sugar.
Add a measure of white rum before blitzing.
You can also leave out the alcohol for a fruity slush that kids will love.
