‘This is insane’ gamers cry as major $1.5bn Disney x Fortnite deal paves the way for new games with Mickey & friends

FORTNITE has done a number of collaborations over the years, and this one is bigger than ever.

While Disney has worked with Epic Games before to bring Star Wars and Marvel skins, this collaboration is far bigger.

Mickey Mouse’s parent company has invested a massive $1.5billion in Fortnite to expand the game going forward.

Is Disney coming to Fortnite?

The money allows Disney to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games, with the hopes of creating a “games and entertainment universe” in Fortnite.

Disney CEO Bob Iger wrote: “Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite.

“[This will create] a transformational new games and entertainment universe. 

“This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion. 

“We can’t wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in groundbreaking new ways.”

Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney has said that the companies are working together to make a “persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem” with Disney content in Fortnite.

Did Fortnite get bought by Disney?

While Disney has invested heavily in Epic Games, it is only an equity stake.

This means that Epic Games still owns Fortnite and all the rights to it.

Fortnite recently added three new modes: Lego Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, and Rocket Racing.

These statements suggest Disney will be working to create another new mode in Fortnite.

However, it is still unclear what exactly will be created, especially considering that Disney already has its own live service games, Disney Dreamlight Valley.

Neither Epic nor Disney have said when this “entertainment universe” is set to be released, but as the investment has only just taken place, it might be a while off.

Fans are shocked by the news with one Twitter user writing: “This is the future.

“This is what Fortnite has become and what’s in store. Are you excited? Nervous?

“No matter what, this is insane.”
