Elizabeth Holmes, Kyle Rittenhouse and Travis McMichael are involved in very different criminal prosecutions. But all three high-profile defendants chose a legal path that carries some risk: They took the stand during their criminal trials.

Criminal defense attorneys said that in cases like those in which the accused has made claims of acting in self-defense, under duress or while suffering with a mental-health issue, it is tougher to present the defense or win over the jury without testifying.
