After months of anticipation, the 2024 Golden Globes nominees were finally announced this week.
From popstar Dua Lipa to actress Hannah Waddingham, plenty of British and Irish stars managed to earn themselves top nods.
But while the stars will have to wait until 7 January to discover their fate, we let curiosity get the better of us and enlisted AI to help predict the results.
MailOnline gave Google‘s Bard the list of nominees and asked it to guess the winners, based on past trends and current reviews.
So, do you agree with its predictions?
Now the nominees have been announced, MailOnline asked AI to predict which films and actors would win at the 2024 Golden Globes
Best Film
When it comes to defining the last year of cinema, nothing is more iconic than the so-called ‘Barbenheimer’ battle between Barbie and Oppenheimer.
This unlikely pairing of films hit the big screen at the same time on July 21 in the UK and a number of other countries.
And in terms of both box office sales and sheer hype, these films dominated the year.
It’s no surprise then that Bard picked Oppenheimer as the likely winner of best drama film and Barbie as best film for comedy or musical.
Explaining why it chose Oppenheimer Bard says: ‘The Golden Globes have a history of favoring historical epics and biopics, and fits this mold perfectly.’
The AI added that ‘the film has received critical acclaim for its performances, its visual effects, and its ambitious scope.’
Bard also points out that Oppenheimer is currently ahead of the pack with eight award nominations, ahead of its closest rival ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ with seven.
As for Barbie, Bard writes: ‘The film’s unique take on the iconic Barbie character, coupled with its witty dialogue, charming characters, and impeccable performances, has captivated audiences and critics alike.
‘Critical praise for balancing sharp satire with genuine emotion and career-best performances from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling solidify Barbie’s position as the top contender.’
Barbenheimer, the simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, dominated 2023 both in terms of box office sales and general hype
In the hotly contested category of best animated feature film, some of the biggest studios are going head to head for the prize.
Disney Pixar’s Elemental and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are up against strong competition from Studio Ghibli’s latest film, the Boy and the Heron.
However, according to the AI, it will ultimately be Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse which wins this competitive category.
Bard AI writes: ‘The film has garnered immense critical acclaim for its innovative animation, vibrant visuals, and captivating story that expands the Spider-Verse into new dimensions.
‘It has also been a commercial success, grossing over $1.5 billion worldwide.’
The AI predicts that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be the winner of best animated feature film next year
Best Actor – Drama
With outstanding performances from a huge number of brilliant actors this year, it might be hard to pick just one winner for the highly coveted prize of best actor in a drama.
Our AI critic, however, had no trouble at all making its choices for the likely winner.
MailOnline asked Bard to consider past Golden Globe records and critic’s reviews of these actors’ performances rather than just of the film.
When given the list of nominees, Bard handed yet another award to Oppenheimer, picking Cillian Murphy for best male actor in a drama.
Cillian Murphy amazed audiences and our AI with his portrayal of Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb
Bard says that Murphy’s performance ‘has garnered immense critical praise, with critics lauding his nuanced performance, emotional depth, and ability to capture the complex dynamics of Oppenheimer’s character.’
The AI adds: ‘His performance has been hailed as one of the most compelling of the year, and it is likely to resonate with the HFPA members who vote on the Golden Globes.’
For the prize of best female actor in a drama, meanwhile, the AI picked Carey Mulligan as the likely winner for her role in Maestro.
Staring as Felicia Montealegre, Leonard Bernstein’s wife, Bard says that Mulligan ‘has garnered immense critical praise, with critics lauding her nuanced performance, emotional depth, and ability to capture the complex dynamics of their relationship.’
Bard notes that, while other actors also gave strong performances this year, ‘Mulligan’s consistent critical acclaim and the sheer gravitas of her role in “Maestro” give her a significant edge in this category.’

Best Actor – Comedy or Musical
Once again, we presented the AI with a tough choice between strong contenders for best actor in a comedy or musical.
And with Barbenheimer already on such a hot streak, who else could our AI pick for best female actor in a comedy or musical than Margot Robbie for her performance in Barbie?
‘Her performance has been hailed as one of the most entertaining and transformative of the year,’ Bard AI said.
The AI cites Robbie’s star power, critical acclaim and the sheer commercial success of Barbie as the factors that make her a sure bet for winner.
In the male category, Bard AI predicts that Nicolas Cage will pick up his second Golden Globe for his role in Dream Scenario.
In this surreal black-comedy, Cage stars as a hapless family man who must deal with the consequences of suddenly appearing in millions of people’s dreams.
According to the AI, Cage stands to win after critics lauded his ‘eccentric and captivating performance, his willingness to go to extremes, and his ability to embody the bizarre and humorous aspects of the character.’
Our AI predicts that it will be Margot Robbie and Nicolas Cage who win the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical
Best Director and Best Screenplay
Now reaching our final category, the results should almost come as no surprise.
Of course, it was the unstoppable forces of Barbie and Oppenheimer that will sweep these key categories, according to the AI.
Barbie might have won at the box office but Bard predicts it will be Christopher Nolan who claims the prize of best director for Oppenheimer.
The AI heaps praise on Nolan’s ‘ability to deftly balance the complex historical context, the scientific intricacies of the Manhattan Project, and the personal struggles of J. Robert Oppenheimer.’
Bard also adds: ‘His direction has been lauded for its innovative visual style, its immersive storytelling, and its profound exploration of human nature in the face of immense scientific power.’
Barbie and Oppenheimer are once again predicted to be on course for awards success in the categories of Best Director and Best Screenplay
And, to bring the awards season to a balanced close, our AI predicts that Greta Gerwig will win best screenplay for Barbie.
While it predicts that Gerwig might miss out on best director, the AI is full of praise for her writing.
The AI critic said: ‘Greta Gerwig’s script for “Barbie” stands out with its originality, intelligence, and sharp social commentary.
‘Her ability to subvert expectations and deliver a compelling story within the Barbie universe has resonated with critics and audiences alike.’
