Tesla plans to open its Supercharger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles in America in late 2022.
The company had already been allowing non-Tesla EVs to use its Supercharger plugs in several European cities.
‘Later this year, Tesla will begin production of new Supercharger equipment that will enable non-Tesla EV drivers in North America to use Tesla Superchargers,’ the White House stated.

The news was quietly announced in a White House ‘fact sheet’ published June 28 and it’s not clear if the Biden administration intentionally scooped Tesla on the matter.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has noted several times that the White House has snubbed him – Tesla wasn’t invited to an EV summit on the topic last year.
Early this year, Musk dubbed President Joe Biden a ‘damp sock puppet’ for not inviting him to the government’s Build Back Better meeting that featured the CEOs of General Motors and Ford.
Last summer, Musk was not included in the White House’s EV summit.
The White House also noted that Tesla employs over 1,600 employees at its Giga New York factory in Buffalo producing Tesla Solar Roof and Supercharger stations.

‘Tesla is expanding production capacity of power electronics components that convert alternating current to direct current, charging cabinets, posts and cables,’ the White House added.
Tesla owners have long touted the benefits of the Supercharger network for its reliability and speed, but up until this point it’s been exclusively for Tesla.
If you happen to own another company’s EV, you’re out of luck.
Musk has spoken in years prior about allowing other automakers to use his Superchargers.
In 2021, the company started doing just that, beginning with Norway and later expanding to Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, the United Kingdom and other countries.
The non-Tesla EV owners will need to have the most recent version of Tesla’s smartphone app in order to access the stations, the company explains on its website.
Drivers would then be prompted to ‘charge your non-Tesla.’
There are approximately 48,000 electric charging vehicle stations in the US, according to the Department of Energy.
Although Tesla was recently dethroned as the world’s largest EV maker, it still produces far more vehicles than any of its American competitors.

Once plugged in, the vehicle’s charge port will flash green to indicate that charging has started.
Drivers can monitor charging progress on your instrument panel or Tesla App.
The chargers allow Tesla owners to recharge their cars to 80 per cent within half an hour.
The firm currently has more than 2,500 Supercharger Stations with 25,000 Superchargers across the globe.
