Around 78% have had troubles getting onto the website, with 16% having app issues and 6% unable to log into their accounts.

It means shoppers also can’t book deliveries or amend existing orders due to the outage.

Shoppers took to Twitter to complain about the crash.

One customer said: “@Tesco site is shocking!

“Crashed so many times since I started to do our shop and the last time it crashed it removed items from the basket…”

Another shopper tweeted: “Is there a problem with @Tesco website or is it just me having problems?”

While others posted screenshots of error messages they were getting while trying to get onto the site.

“Either get a 505 error or a 504 gateway time out,” one customer said.

Tesco confirmed on social media that it was having technical difficulties.

It replied to one unhappy customer: “Unfortunately, we are aware of there being issues with the website at the moment, but please be assured that the IT team are working as fast as they can to resolve this.”

It’s not the first time Tesco has experienced tech issues.

The supermarket’s website and app went down in February, leaving customers’ shopping in limbo.

That followed on from a similar outage the month before in January.

Shoppers also reported problems accessing the supermarket’s website after a suspected cyber attack in October last year.

Tesco was approached for comment.

How to check if the Tesco app and website are working

The best way to see if there are issues with the Tesco website or app is to check directly.

The supermarket app showed an error message making it clear that the problems are widespread.

You can also see whether other customers have reported issues on Downdetector.

Shoppers can also check the supermarket’s social media pages for updates.

Can you claim compensation for outages?

There’s no fixed compensation scheme for supermarket website outages like there is for other industries such as telecoms.

But if being unable to access your account has left you out of pocket, it’s worth contacting Tesco.
