TESCO has hiked the price of one of its most popular dinner deals and shoppers are fuming.

The supermarket has quietly raised the price of the Tesco Finest Dinner for two meal deal from £10 up to £12 – a rise of 20%.

The price hike came into effect on May 9, and customers are disappointed to hear they’ll have to fork out more for their food.

The grocer’s popular offer gets you one main, one side, one dessert and a drink from a selected range of products.

Shoppers can choose meals like ranch steaks with peppercorn butter (usually £6) and a bottle of Spanish Shiraz worth £7.

The hike came as a major blow for some customers who complained it was way above inflation.

One shopper said on Twitter: “Tesco please could you tell me why amongst other things your Finest Meal for 2 deal has gone up by 20% from £10 to £12? Inflation is supposed to be around 7% not 20%.

“I got a pay rise this year of 1.5%. Can you see the problem here?”

Another upset shopper raged: “Omg….couldn’t be bothered cooking tonight….no problem….Tesco finest meal deal….lasagna, bread, lime cheesecake, bottle of wine and not forgetting a 20% price hike. Wtf!!!! 20%.!!!!!!”

But despite the price rise, shoppers feeling the pinch because of the cost of living crisis can still save between £3.10 and £6.50 on the deal if they pick the right items.

The cost of each of the mains, sides and desserts are largely the same.

Shoppers can get a Portobello Mushroom Stroganoff, Pork Meatballs in Tomatoes & Chorizo Sauce or Slow Cooked Gammon Shank in Pineapple, all of which would usually cost £6 each.

Sides would usually be £2.60 each – and these include creamed Spinach, Chunky Chips, and Potato Dauphinoise.

But the real difference depends on which drink you choose. While you could opt for a six-pack of Coca-Cola Zero worth £3.50, you’d get better bang for your buck choosing from the wines in the deal, each of which usually costs £7.

All in all, if you select the most expensive items from the deal, they would cost a total of £18.50 – while the cheapest would come in at £15.10.

You can see a full list of products currently included on Tesco’s meal deal on Tesco’s website.

Prior to the price increase, Tesco was leading the way for cheap dinners for two.

Morrisons’ The Best Dine In For Two is also £12, and the infamous M&S dine-in deal is also priced at £12 but does not include a drink.

Tesco said: “Our Finest Dinner for Two Meal Deal is a perfect treat for the weekend or a special occasion. And at £12 for a main, side, dessert and drink for two people – it’s great value.”

Earlier this week, Tesco revealed a major change to its Clubcard prices which will see hundreds of healthier products on offer for shoppers.

The supermarket said it wants to help families afford food that’s better for them.

This month, Clubcard members will see up to a third off the price of products like Tesco meat and veg burgers, kebabs, mince, sausages, meatballs and more.
