BEWARE three common PS5 mistakes that could waste your time, start fires, and use up valuable storage.
There’s no end to potential PlayStation gaffes that you might make – but some are more serious than others.
We reveal three gaming bungles that are easy enough to avoid if you set your mind to it.
Wrong place!
Be very careful where you put your PS5 – like all electronics, it’s at risk of overheating of fires.
Make sure that it’s well-ventilated so that the console can vent hot air effectively.
That means avoiding playing on it in a cramped TV cabinet if possible.

“Do not use the console in a closed cabinet or other locations where heat may build up,” Sony explained.
“Doing so may cause the console to overheat and may lead to fire, injury or malfunction.”
If your console is getting very warm, you should receive a pop-up notification.
You must never ignore this message – it’s very serious.

“If the console becomes too hot, you will see a notification message on your screen,” Sony said.
“In this case, turn off the console and wait until it cools down.
“Continued used may lead to damage or malfunction.
“After the console cools down, move it to a well-ventilated location that is not subject to high temperatures before resuming use.”
Wasted storage
Your PS5 is set up to automatically save a 15-second 4K video when you earn a Trophy.
Over time, this can add up to mammoth amounts of storage that is almost certainly wasted – unless you’re a die-hard completionist that loves to rewatch your achievements.
To turn them off, go to Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Auto-Captures > Trophies.
If you’ve already got a load saved, just go into your PS5 media and delete any clips that you no longer want.
Similarly you should consider deleting Astro’s Playroom.
If you’ve already completed the pre-installed title – or don’t plan to play it any time soon – then you can instantly clear nearly 11GB of space by scrubbing it.
And it’s free to reinstall if you ever change your mind.
Not using Rest Mode
For the keen gamer, Rest Mode is one of the most powerful tools on your PS5 – so ignore it at your peril.
One of the worst things about owning a console is logging on to play – only to find out you can’t.
Maybe your console needs a giant update, or you need to patch a game. Perhaps even both are true.
By using Rest Mode, you can ensure that these updates happen automatically – so the console is ready to play when you switch it on.
Go to Settings > System > System Software Update and Settings and make sure your console can update automatically.
Then go to Settings > Saved Data and Game Settings, and ensure that Automatic Updates is on for your games.
Finally, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features > Available in Rest Mode and make sure that the correct download settings are toggled on.
Then next time you go to turn your PS5 off, make sure to choose the Rest Mode option instead.

It’ll use more electricity than having it fully switched off, so consider only using it when you know that a big update is coming.
Note that you can also schedule game downloads from anywhere using the PlayStation app while your console is in Rest Mode.
