Users are unable to use the desktop and mobile apps and as a result, cannot send or receive messages.

More than 1,000 people have reported problems with the platform on DownDetector, a website that keeps tabs on outages of online services.

When attempting to access Telegram’s app, users are seeing “updating” or “connecting” error messages.

It is unclear if the Dubai-based company – one of WhatsApp’s biggest rivals – is aware of the problem.

Telegram has not posted anything about the outage on its official Twitter accounts.

Users in the U.S, Europe, India, Japan, Australia, and other parts of the world are reportedly affected.

They took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at the downtime, which has taken Telegram’s services offline for over an hour.

One Twitter user fumed: “S**t why is telegram down?!?!”

Another wrote: “Telegram is completely down on my iPhone! It’s not able to connect to the WiFi or Mobile data !”

Telegram is a secure messaging app with more a reported 550 million monthly active users across the globe.

Like WhatsApp, it offers end-to-end encryption, which means only the sender and recipient of a message can read it.

Telegram saw a huge flux of users last year ahead of a controversial change to the way that WhatsApp processed its users’ personal data.

Millions of users jumped ship to Telegram and fellow secure messaging app Signal in the space of a few days amid fears over their privacy.
