ALDI is set to slash the cost of its Christmas veggies to just 19p as the annual supermarket price war over the cheapest greens kicks off.
From December 17, the discounter will reduce six vegetable varieties, including potatoes and carrots.
For 19p each, you can get 2kg of potoatoes, 1kg of carrots, 500g of parsnips, 500g of sprouts, one swede and one red or white cabbage.
But the supermarket is not the only grocer to drop Christmas food prices.
In the last couple of years, supermarkets have been going head-to-head in a Christmas price war with last minute deals.
How to cut the cost of your grocery shop
MONEY.CO.UK has shared some top tips with us to help you keep your supermarket spend down to a minimum.
- Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
- Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
- Never shop hungry – You are far more likely to buy more food if your tummy is rumbling
- Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
- Use social media – Follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
- Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
- Check the small print – It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
- Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards
Tesco has already slashed its Christmas veggie prices to 29p, including cauliflower.
The supermarket is offering 2.5kg of full-sized potatoes, with 1kg of carrots, 500g of Brussels sprouts, 500g of parsnips and cauliflower for 29p.
These prices are not as low as Aldi’s, which offers the same weight of carrots, brussel sprouts and parnips for 10p less.
Meanwhile, Tesco is offering 11.6p per kg of potatoes while Aldi is offering 9.6p per kg – so Aldi again works out cheaper.
But Tesco is slashing its prices sooner as the offer starts today in both stores and online – six days before Aldi.
We’d recommend mixing and matching the veggies from each supermarket since only Aldi is including a swede in its Christmas offer and only Tesco is offering cauliflower.
Both Asda and Lidl told us that they will also be releasing their reduced Christmas vegetables prices on an unconfirmed date.
Last year Lidl slashed its prices on greens to just 15p from December 19.
Meanwhile Asda started giving away vegetables for freein some stores last year after prices were slashed to 60p.
We will keep this page updated when more supermarkets join the price war.
For now, use comparison websites like MoneySupermarket.com to keep track of prices so you get the best deal.
It lets shoppers compare prices at Tesco, Asda, Ocado, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Iceland, Aldi and Lidl, to name a few.
It comes as Tesco and Asda have been accused of charging customers 10 per cent more than Lidl and Aldi for nearly identical Christmas food under different labels.
