Warburtons and Morrisons have teamed up to offer free crumpets to anyone who “Asks for Ellen.”

The offer will be available across all 397 Morrisons cafes, from March, 25, to April 14, coinciding with the Easter holidays.

It is not the first time the offer has been launched across stores during the kid’s school holidays.

The initiative was started to help struggling families, and there is some history behind it.

The free giveaway pays homage to Ellen Warburton, co-founder of the company.

The company’s ethos revolves around giving back, as evidenced by its donations of over one million bakery products in the past year alone.

Last year, over 300,000 portions of crumpets were given away during the summer holidays and autumn half term.

The latest giveaway comes off the back of new research that reveals over six million families notice an increase in their weekly shopping bill during the school holidays.

The research also showed that an overwhelming 82% of parents spend more on snacks to keep up with demand from their children.

The free crumpets will be available to anyone who “Asks for Ellen” – no questions asked, all day, while stocks last at all Morrisons cafes.

How to find the best bargains at the supermarket

The free crumpet deal is not the only way you can save as a family at Morrisons.

Kids eat free in the cafe when you purchase any adult meal with a value of £4.50 or over.

The offer is limited to one free meal from the kid’s menu with any one adult meal and excludes all cafe specials.

The kid’s meal includes a piece of fruit and Tropicana kid’s orange or apple drink or a bottle of water.

You can find more details of the offer on the Morrisons website.

What do other supermarkets offer?

Many supermarkets have been stepping up with new initiatives to help struggling households.

Asda made a big change earlier this year to help its shoppers with the cost of living.

In February it offered all its customers a free bowl of porridge and a hit drink every day for a period of around six weeks.

Very much like the Warburtons and Morrisons offer there was no eligibility criteria all you had to do was ask for the deal at the counter.

Shoppers were delighted at the offer, which was run in partnership with Quaker.

One person wrote on social media at the time: “What a great idea, lovely for youngsters to have a warm breakfast.”

Another said: “Well done Asda for looking after your community and customers.”

Asda also ran a deal where shoppers aged over 60 and over could get hot soup and a roll with unlimited tea and coffee for £1.

Asda has also made its Kids Eat for £1 meal deal permanent across all cafes as well.

Sainsbury’s launched a “Feed your family for a fiver” campaign. On the Sainsbury’s website, you can access cheap recipes that will feed a family a family of four for under £5.

Meanwhile, Morrisons was praised by customers earlier in the year when it made a huge change at all stores that was a “big deal” for exhausted customers.

The retailer, which runs almost 500 shops, has put in seating areas in its branches for “anyone needing a break mid-shop.”

Free cash schemes if you’re struggling

Many of us are still struggling with the high cost of living – but there’s help you can get.

New or expectant parents can get up to £442 a year to spend on food through Healthy Start scheme.

Some new parents can get £500 via the  Sure Start Maternity Grant. The money is designed to help you cover the costs of having a child.

Councils also offer support through the welfare assistance schemes, to help cover the costs of essentials, from buying new furniture to food vouchers.

The amount you can get varies but an investigation by The Sun found that hard-up Brits can apply for help worth up to £1,000.

Discretionary Housing Payment is a pot of money handed out by councils to those struggling to keep a roof over their heads.

A scheme is available for those who find themselves unable to cover housing costs, though the exact amount varies as each local authority dishes out the cash on a case-by-case basis.

Many energy forms offer grants to help cash-tight customers. The exact amount varies depending on your supplier and you circumstances, but could be as much a £2,000.
