WE will see vampires on the streets for Halloween this week – but did you know they are also in your home sucking up power and money?
So-called “vampire appliances” drain energy when left on standby or when used inefficiently — and you can end up paying hundreds of extra pounds a year. Here we show you how to stop bleeding cash . . .
SWITCH OFF: Leaving your gadgets and appliances on standby costs people £35 a year without them even realising. The main culprits are your TV, £16.24 a year; printer, £6.50; laptop, £4.87; and smart speaker, £3.45. Try getting an extension lead to plug in all your chargers and electricals so you can switch everything off together.
LIGHTBULB MOMENT: Turn off the lights when you’re not around — and make them as efficient as possible while they’re on. Replace all your old halogen bulbs with greener LEDs. It could save up to £40 a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
KEEP IT COOL: Doing your laundry at 30C rather than 40C can mean savings of up to £23 a year for a family, says Which? It will also reduce wear on clothes. But always wash clothes at a hotter temperature when they’re muddy.
DON’T DRY TOO HARD: Using your tumble dryer three times a week all year around will cost you £54 for the year. But drying your washing outside and limiting the tumble dryer to the wetter months will save you £27 a year, says Octopus Energy.
OFF THE BOIL: Only use the kettle to boil the water that’s needed when making a cuppa. This could cut £7 off your annual bill.
SPOILED COILS: Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the condenser coils at the back or underneath your fridge or freezer. Thick dust can reduce their efficiency by up to 25 per cent if left unchecked, according to Which? You could save up to £4 per year.
