HEATING bills are soaring at the moment, as many of us are stuck indoors day after day.
But worry not, you can stay cosy and warm of an evening without spending a fortune. Here are some savvy tips to help . . .
GAME OF DRAUGHTS: Gaps around doors are one sure way to lose heat and money. Instead of spending £16 at Dunelm for a draught excluder to place against the bottom of a door, just hang an old single curtain from the top or roll up a small rug to put at the base.
SAVING: £11
HANG IN THERE: We lose around 40 per cent of home heat through windows and doorways. Forget new curtains — a pair from Next will set you back at least £25. Try simply hanging a bargain PVC shower drape — I like the ones sold at Poundland — on the inside of your curtains. This will help to stop warmth escaping.
SAVING: up to £24
THROWS OF WINTER: If your summer duvet is not thick enough now, you need not pay for an expensive winter tog to get a good night’s sleep — just layer up with a cosy blanket. Dunelm’s super-soft Fleece Throw is £6 — far cheaper than a Silentnight Warm and Cosy 15 Tog Duvet, £31, from Argos.
SAVING: £25
SUPER SOUPS: There is nothing quite like a hot, homemade soup — with crusty bread, of course — on a chilly night. But making your own need not be a chore. I love the Salter soup maker, £43.94, on Amazon. It is cheaper and more compact than a similar Cuisinart one that’s £97.49. Whip up smooth or chunky soup in a jiffy. It comes with a recipe book.
