Spider-Man star Tom Holland is taking a break from social media after trolls and things about him online send his mental health ‘spiralling’.
The Brit took to Instagram to post a final video before his hiatus to explain to fans why he won’t be as active or posting on social media for some time.
Although not knowing how long he’ll be taking a break, the Marvel star has been praised for being open and talking about his mental health.
TOM HOLLAND DECLARES HE’LL BE TAKING A BREAK FROM SOCIAL MEDIA
Late on Saturday night, the talented actor began the video by admitting he had already recorded it several times but couldn’t get it just right. He confessed he kept ‘umming’ and ‘ahhing’ despite his extensive work speaking in the acting world.
Nevertheless he explained he would be taking a break from social media as he finds ‘Instagram and Twitter overstimulating’. Tom said reading things said about him on Instagram and Twitter, or online, send him ‘spiralling’. These can be trolls, social media users and comments and things online.
He said he finds the apps to be: “Overwhelming, I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online. Ultimately, it’s very detrimental to my mental state, so I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”
He admitted the clip was a ‘brief’ return to the app. Therefore, it appears the 26-year-old had already decided to take a break but did so privately. As before this clip was shared on August 14, he hadn’t declared it publicly in previous posts.
TOM OPENS UP OVER ‘STIGMA AGAINST MENTAL HEALTH’
He then proceeded to explain the charity is an education program which showcases mental health conferences. It also has help for young kids and their mental health.
Tom then said: “There is an awful stigma against mental health. I know asking for help and seeking help isn’t something we should be ashamed of but it is something that is much easier said than done.”
Tom was applauded for the video and for speaking up about mental health.
Justin Bieber responded with a red heart emoji and penned: “Love you man”.
Footballer John Terry added three blue hearts. Influencer, YouTuber and TikTok star King Bach sent prayer hands and hearts.
One fan said: “Don’t worry we understand but we also gonna miss you”.
A second wrote: “Please take all the time you need. The thing that matters the most is your well being”.
THE BROTHERS TRUST
The star’s recent post had been from six weeks beforehand. He had shared the new shirts from The Brothers Trust – set up by Tom’s parents Nikki and Dom Holland in 2017.
On their site, they write: “The Brothers Trust was set up in 2017 by Nikki and Dom Holland, parents to four boys; Tom, Sam, Harry and Paddy – the ‘brothers’. Tom Holland is the focal point of the charity and its fund raising efforts. But he is ably supported by his younger brothers.
“Using Tom’s reach and popularity, the trust intends to run a number of events each year and the funds raised then being granted to charities who we support.
“The trust is keen to shine a light on charities who struggle to be heard in the noisy and competitive not-for-profit sector – and charities who can best demonstrate the most effective use of funds to profit the people in need and not on bloated administration.”
