AS the festive season draws near, food and drink is BIG business – with everything from giant bottles of fizz, to preposterously sized pigs-in-blankets hitting the shops.

But don’t be fooled, bigger doesn’t always mean better value. Check out these festive buys to see what I mean . . .

TAKING THE SWISS: Can you believe that a giant 4.5kg Toblerone bar is £99.95 on Amazon! To get the same amount of the triangular treat for less, pick up a stash of 100g bars from Iceland for just £1 each.

Buying 45 bars will get you 4.5kg for a far more palatable £45. If you really need that Toblerone fix.

THAT’S SOME BOTTLE: The six-litre methuselah bottles of Aldi prosecco are set to hit stores nearer Christmas. While they look impressive, they are usually £79.99 — that’s £13.33 per litre.

So if you don’t want a party piece, just the booze, buy eight 75cl bottles of Aldi’s Castellore Prosecco Spumante DOC. At £5.99 each, that works out at £47.92 for six litres — or £7.99 per litre.

CHOC HORROR: You can pick up a Grand Ferrero Rocher from studio.co.uk for £6.99, but chocolate fans will be disappointed to find the giant sweet contains only 125g of chocolate.

If you’re not fussed about the gimmick, stick to the classic 16-piece box on offer at Wilko for £4, saving you £2.99 and upping your choc content to 200g.

SAVE: £2.99

BANGER FOR YOUR BUCK: Asda’s popular foot-long pig-in-blanket is back on sale this festive season.

Made of British pork and streaky bacon rashers, it weighs 650g, costs £5 and can feed ten. For the same amount — or more — of pork for your pennies, you can instead buy a pack of 681g Asda 12 pork sausages for £2.30, and a pack of Asda Farm Stores bacon rashers, 300g, for £1.25 to make your own.
