Instead of letting them go to waste, use your booze to add flavour to some tasty dishes.

FEELING SAUCY: One of the easiest ways to use up leftover plonk is to make a sauce.

Simply deglaze the pan with any wine dregs after cooking meat or vegetables, then add some stock, butter and herbs to make a delicious sauce.

A great tip is to freeze white wine in an ice cube tray so you can add a few cubes to a cream sauce to give it depth.

STEW THINGS OVER: A favourite budget lunch or dinner is a soup or a stew. Add a dash of wine to intensify the flavour.

Dry wines tend to work better as sweet ones can make the food taste too sugary.

FISH ’N’ SIPS: Got a few beer cans lying around? Save them for your fish supper.

Make your own batter using a can or bottle of beer whisked with two cups of self-raising flour. Dredge your fish in the batter and fry.

Make your own chips, and that’s a bargain dinner.

DRESS IT UP: Leftover white or red wine can make a great salad vinaigrette.

Simply add it to a bowl along with olive oil, vinegar and herbs and whisk until the ingredients are well combined.

Toss over the leaves to serve.

POACH THIS IDEA: Make a great dessert such as poached pear by simmering the fruit in your leftover wine, sugar, and cinnamon.

Cook until it is tender and serve with a scoop of ice cream.

A LIQUEUR-IOUS SOLUTION: Save the last of any gin or fruit liqueurs and add a drizzle to Eton Mess-style desserts, or even whisk into the cream cheese for your cheesecake.

This works really well for gin liqueurs when served with berries.
