GREEN Sir Keir Starmer last night vowed to save Brits £400 a year on their energy bills with a £6billion home insulation splurge.

In a move which delighted Insulate Britain eco-warriors across the nation, he declared a mission to make 19million homes warmer and cheaper to heat within a decade.

The motorway-blocking rabble have been causing chaos for weeks in an attempt to pressure ministers into announcing new green insulation measures.

One woman glued to the road said yesterday: “That’s excellent news. Let’s get the Labour Party in.”

He claimed it would save families hundreds of pounds every year on energy bills – as many are now seeing their costs spiral out of control.

Brits would get grants and interest-free loans to pay for the cost of double glazing, upgraded heating systems and other renewable and green technology.

The UK has some of the least energy efficient housing in Europe and Britain’s leaky homes lead to nearly 15 per cent of all emissions in the UK.

He said the plan would stop households being vulnerable to surges in energy prices and create around 200,000 new jobs.

But Labour admitted the plan would be paid for by billions more borrowing.

Sir Keir said yesterday: “If we are serious about climate change we will need to upgrade our homes.

“And now we have a crisis in energy prices, emissions from homes have increased and we have the least energy-efficient housing in Europe.

“So it will be Labour’s national mission over the next decade to fit out every home that needs it to make sure it is warm, well-insulated and costs less to heat.”

Cops detained several activists from the rabble-rousing group after they blocked yet another road near the M25 yesterday.

Recent Opinium polling for the New Economics Foundation shows 65 per cent of people support a national retrofitting taskforce, with only 7 per cent opposing.

Chaitanya Kumar, Head of Environment and Green Transition at the NEF hailed the announcement last night, saying Labour were “absolutely right to take the bull by the horns and announce such a common-sense retrofit policy that will create thousands of jobs, tackle fuel poverty and prevent thousands of premature deaths due to cold and damp homes”.

And they called on ministers to follow suit and copy them with a similar plan.
