SHOPPERS have ridiculed John Lewis for selling a bizarre balloon Christmas tree.

The alternative tree is made entirely of balloons and has proved to be quite a crowd divider on social media.

The kit from John Lewis contains 108 Christmas balloons in gold, white, green and red as well as candy cane foil balloons.

Buyers can top the tree, which costs £25, with a gold foil star balloon.

But shoppers will be expected to assemble the tree themselves, as it arrives unmade, using the clear string, tape and glue dots provided in the pack.

But many shoppers are unimpressed by the unusual festive offering branding it as “plastic tat” and “unsustainable”.

One follower said: “How in such a large company did one single person not realise this was a bad idea?”

Another added: “Not a great move @johnlewis Can’t believe no one on your management team thought about the impact on the environment.”

John Lewis posted a picture of the colourful tree on its Instagram page with the caption: “Looking for an alternative Christmas Tree this year?

“Our Ginger Ray Balloon tree is made up of over 100 balloons and contains everything you need to make this unique Christmas display.

“What do you think of this festive show stopper?”

But the firm soon received messages from followers slating the product.

One user said: “Not very environmentally friendly though is it.”

Another added: “Oh nooooo #nomoreplastic That’s a real sh**ty idea.”

Another follower said: “That it’s completely unsustainable for just a few days of the year.”

Not everyone hated the tree though.

One follower said: “I actually love this I might get one.”

Another simply added: “So good.”
