Shoppers are only just noticing a huge supermarket change to milk on shelves leaving them baffled

SHOPPERS have spotted a huge change to milk on supermarket shelves and it’s leaving them baffled.

Retailers have been ditching their usual colourful packaging for milk tops to help the environment.

Instead, supermarkets like Lidl, Aldi, Waitrose and Co-op have replaced them with clear plastic lids which can be recycled more easily.

It means shoppers will have to look a lot closer at the labels, instead of glancing at the top of bottles.

A green lid usually signals that it’s semi-skimmed milk, and a red cap is for skimmed milk, while blue is for whole milk.

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has become the latest retailer to make the switch to clear tops.

Sainsbury’s confirmed that it has gradually been rolling our clear milk bottle tips for semi-skimmed milk since October.

The retailer confirmed it is planning to make the change across its entire milk supply this year.

But some say the change has made it harder for them to choose the correct bottle from the shelf.

One Twitter user said: “I come back to the country and they change the milk top to clear? Am I missing something?”

While another added: “Clear milk tops are going to cause confusion.”

And a third fumed: “These clear lids on milk bottles have be tripping.

“Half an hour spent looking for the lid which was on top of the bottle the entire time.”

Posh shop Waitrose ditched its red, blue and green milk caps over the summer.

While Aldi has been trialling the switch since August, ditching its coloured caps.

The Sun has contacted Aldi to find out when the trial is set to end.

Fellow discounter Lidl followed suit in October, bringing in the change permanently.

Co-op removed all coloured milk bottle lids from its shelves in November in favour of clear caps.

Adam Williams, Co-op’s milk buyer, said: “There are changes in store for how shoppers see milk bottle tops, with the new caps able to be more easily recycled and retained in the food sector unlike their coloured counterparts.”
