Are shops closed on the Easter Bank Holiday?

Shops that are bigger than 280 square metres in size must be closed on Easter Sunday, because of a rule upheld by the UK Government.

Due to this legislation, supermarket chains such Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco will have to close there doors for the whole day.

This also affects large hardware stores such as B&Q and Homebase, as they are larger than the maximum size allowed.

This does not apply to Scotland however, as there are no restrictions on trading over Bank Holiday’s.

Shops that are smaller than 280 square metres in size will be allowed to open.

This is because these are considered small shops. It means that smaller versions of supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s local will be allowed to open on Easter Sunday.

Other companies stores that do not exceed the 280 square metre size limit are allowed to be open on this day.

However, there is nothing stopping them from closing the store for the whole day in order to give their staff a break.
