PLAYSTATION fans say there’s a trick to saving money – but you have to make your mind up when you buy your console.

It’s to do with the exact type of PS5 model you purchase.

There are two main variants of PS5: the regular version and the Digital Edition.

A normal PS5 will cost you $499.99 / £479.99, while the Digital Edition is slightly cheaper at $449.99 / £389.99.

The catch with the Digital Edition is that you can’t insert any discs – but you do save some money on the purchase.

In a Reddit thread, one PlayStation fan asked: “Is it worth the extra money to buy the disc version of the PS5?

“It is easier to be able to use discs, or should I just save money and get the digital version?”

The verdict was that if you’re buying a lot of games, you’ll save more money in the long run with a disc-friendly console.

That’s because when you own the digital PS5 console, you’re limited to digital purchases only.

That means you’re largely at the mercy of Sony‘s official PlayStation Store pricing.

With a disc console, you can purchase digital titles – but also physical games too.

LET’S DISC-US

I’m a PS5 gamer and there are five little-known buttons that instantly boost your controller’s battery – try them now

One user wrote: “If you buy more than a couple of games a year, yes. You can get new games slightly cheaper at release through big box stores.

“Further, if you trade in games / sell them when completed, that’s an added bonus.”

Another said: “I personally say yes as you can buy games cheaper and when finished you can sell them on.”

One added: “I bought the physical version for the exact reasons others have stated. Resale value.”

“Not only can you get used games cheaper much of the time, but you can also sell games back for store credit towards other games. If you play a lot of games this can save you quite a bit of money in the long haul.”

And another noted: “As disc media is thought to be on the way out you will be able to pick up second hand PS4/PS5 games and own them making PS5 both future-proof and financially better option in the long run.”

So even though you save $50 / £90 at purchase, you could save much more over several years with the regular disc-accepting console.
