DOING a little DIY this bank holiday?

Long weekends are perfect for giving things a little spruce but having the house refreshed and revamped can often be costly as well as time consuming.

With that in mind, here are some of my favourite savvy hacks for when it comes to doing it yourself . . .

LIGHT UP: A tip to give your home a little lift is to update the light switches — these can make all the difference and cost a fraction of a big overhaul. For example, switching the covers from plastic to new metal ones can work wonders. I like those sold at sparkswarehouse.com for £3.89, usually £12.58, saving you £8.69 — plus they’re in that popular Mrs Hinch-style grey.

PAINT WITH EASE: I’ve seen many canny mums online explaining how they avoid mess by lining their paint trays with tin foil before pouring the paint in. Once you’ve finished painting, you can simply scrunch up the foil and throw it away without having to do any washing up. But, if you want to save on pennies as well as time, you can also use an old plastic bag over the top of your paint tray — it works just as well.

STRAIGHT EDGE: When it comes to the edging of paint work, it can be tricky to get it perfect. However mums on Facebook have been raving about the perfectly neat edges achieved by using a hairdresser’s hair tint brush. These can be picked up for just 60p online — which is far cheaper than using lots of masking tape or more expensive specialist brushes,

GROUT AND GO: Grouting looking a little grubby? If you want to smarten it up without forking out a fortune or spending hours scrubbing, try using a cheap and cheerful grout pen for a quick touch-up. I like the Unibond Ice White Grout Reviver Pen, £3.50, down from £4 at Wilko but if you don’t mind unbranded, you can also nab anti-mould options in eight colours from eBay for around £2.34 each — plus there’s buy one, get one ten per cent off.

Giselle’s little helper

MORRISONS has just launched an adult picnic platter for two people for just £10.

It’s fully loaded with jam and cream scones, ham sandwiches, tuna and sweetcorn sandwiches, mini pork pies, cherry Bakewells, a pot of sharing strawberries, quiche Lorraine and fresh salad.

Sounds like a tasty bargain to me.
