Samsung has injected its camera and photos app with a massive dose of AI

The Korean phone giant has earmarked late March to unleash its latest AI features, which are currently only available to Galaxy S24 owners.

Samsung released the Galaxy S24 at its Unpacked event last month.

Now Samsung has announced it will extend these features to Galaxy S23 phones – including the S23 FE handset – as well as last year’s editions of the foldables and tablets.

This includes the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, the Galaxy Tab S9, S9 Plus, and S9 Ultra.

“Our goal with Galaxy AI is not only to pioneer a new era of mobile AI but also to empower users by making AI more accessible,” TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics said in a blog post.

“This is only the beginning of Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring the experience to over 100 million Galaxy users within 2024 and continue to innovate ways to harness the unlimited possibilities of mobile AI.”

Samsung has injected its camera and photos app with a massive dose of AI.

Gauss is the name of a Samsung-exclusive AI that consists of three tools: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code and Samsung Gauss Image.

Some of these features were already available on the previous Galaxy S handsets.

But one addition with Gauss Image is the ability to magically expand your photo beyond what was taken.

So, imagine you got a beautiful shot on the beach but the angle wasn’t quite right. Adjusting it slightly might leave some weird gaps around the edges.

I’ve seen the future of WhatsApp messages and emails on Samsung Galaxy S24 – it’ll save you a load of time

AI on the Galaxy S24 will cleverly work out what those gaps would look like and fill them in based on what it sees in the photo.

Other cool tools include the ability to remove unwanted objects – or people – as well as move or enlarge them.

Language

Samsung owners will be able to use the innovative AI Live Translate Call.

With the new functionality, users can get live translation for calls in multiple languages – including English and Spanish.

It’ll also summaries your messages and emails for you, which could be especially handy for friends that like to send essay texts.

The Sun saw first hand how it can change the tone of a text or communication for you – so you can write a rough few lines and it’ll make suggests of a more formal tone, a conversational tone, or a polite tone for example.

AI wallpapers

Among all the AI excitement coming to Samsung’s phones are AI wallpapers.

If you’re wondering what that means, well, essentially you can tell your phone exactly what you want the wallpaper to look like and it’ll create it for you.

It uses a generative artificial intelligence model that can generate high quality text, images – and in this case, wallpapers, at the drop of a hat.

Just type out what it is and the AI will generate an image.

It could be as wild as cows flying through space or a serine beach setting with your name in the sky.

All users need to do is give it a few text-based prompts, such as ‘floral sketches’ or ‘3D rendering of a galaxy’.

Ambient weather wallpapers

You can now add weather onto wallpapers, too.

So if it’s raining outside, that’s what you’ll see over your wallpaper.

It serves as a much more visual and quick way for weather updates.

The AI race inside your smartphone

AI technology remains in the spotlight for eagle-eyed smartphone companies like Samsung, Google and Apple.

Google has announced a host of new AI features this year, including its Magic Editor, as well as updates to Gmail and Docs and Maps.

There have even been rumours of a secret AI life coach.

But Apple is has seemingly fallen behind.

While there are a few AI features on iPhones, none of them come close to what Samsung has unveiled.

However, Tim Cook’s company has reportedly been pumping a huge amount of cash into the cause, with rumours swirling that the iPhone 16 will be when Apple makes its generative AI debut.

This will reportedly include a brand new version of Siri – which may operate in a similar way to ChatGPT and Samsung Gauss.
