SAINSBURY’S and M&S shoppers are rushing to buy a retro Christmas cake – but fans say they’re a “nightmare” to get a hold of.
The supermarket giants are both selling their own versions of Tunis cake, a Madeira sponge topped with chocolate and marzipan fruits.
McVities starting producing its own version in the 1940s but it was axed four decades later.
That hasn’t stopped some shoppers calling for the iconic branded version to make a comeback though.
A Facebook page entitled “McVities Tunis Cake Campaign” has been set up calling for the iconic cake to make a return to shelves.
Luckily, in the same group, one person recently posted saying they had found an own-brand version in their local Sainsbury’s branch.

They added a photo of the cake, captioning it their very own “Christmas miracle”.
They said: “I’ve been to my local Sainsburys every day… not even a space on the shelf for them.
“Today I spy an empty gap and a label….I asked the staff if they had any, she went out the back to check, as they just had a delivery….she came back with one. So excited.”
The post has notched up over a thousand likes and comments from foodies who can’t wait to snap up the oldie goldie.
