Rowntree’s say ‘sorry’ to shoppers who threaten to BOYCOTT them until axed 80s treat is returned to shelves

ROWNTREE’S has apologised to shoppers who threatened to boycott it after the axing of an iconic 80s treat.

Confectionery lovers were quick to name one of their favourite sweets – saying they were devastated when it vanished from shelves.

But now some have said they miss the Nutty bar so much, they’ll stop buying from Rowntree’s until it’s brought back.

The sweet saw peanuts held together by a thick layer of caramel formed in a bar-like shape.

The purple wrapper had orange writing, describing it as a “nourishing bar of peanut fudge and caramel”.

Shoppers have fond memories of the sweet, which was said to have vanished from shelves decades ago.

But now, they’re calling for it to be put back on shelves for the first time in the 21st century.

One fan wrote: “Dear Rowntree’s, bring back the Nutty bar or I will stop buying randoms? You have been warned.”

Others wrote: “I’m still mourning the loss of Rowntree’s Nutty Bar.”

While another said: “Can only be a matter a time before Rowntree’s relaunch the Nutty then. *Prays*.”

But, to the devastation of nut lovers, Rowntree’s said it wouldn’t be fulfilling their wishes.

The confectionery brand wrote: “Sorry to have to give you disappointing news, unfortunately Rowntree’s Nutty has been discontinued from our range.

“We’ll let the team know you’re missing it.”

It comes just days after the brand said it would never be bringing back another iconic sweet.

Tooty Frooties – squircle-shaped treats similar to Skittles – were quietly axed in 2019 after 50 years.

Nestlé, which bought Rowntree’s in 1988, said they were not popular enough.

With crunchy sugar shells on the outside and a squidgy inside, Tooty Frooties came in strawberry, lemon, lime, orange and blackcurrent flavour.

But after a tweet advertising the new ‘Festives’ edition of Rowntree’s Randoms, which include Christmas tree-shaped pastilles, one fan wasn’t sold.

Mags wrote: “Never mind Festive Randoms. Bring back Tutti Fruttis.”

But Rowntree’s hit back, hammering the final nail into the coffin of her sweet dreams.

They said: “Tooty Frooties are not coming back, sadly, Mags.

“All eyes on the new Randoms and their cute shapes. Find the festive ones.”

In 2020, Rowntree’s changed its legendary 139-year-old Fruit Pastilles recipe to go vegan.

Until then the sweet – launched in 1881 – included gelatine, derived from collagen from animal parts.

Maker Rowntree’s, which is owned by Nestlé, said the move followed requests by veggie fans.
