Rafiq Tarar Obituary
Muhammad Rafiq Tarar was born on 2 November 1929 in Mandi Bahauddin, British Raj, when Pakistan was still fighting for its independence.
Influenced by Syed Ata Ullah Shah Bukhari, he used to take part in political sessions of Majlis-e-Ahrar-e-Islam and remained an activist of the Muslim League and follower of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
In 1949, he graduated with B.A. in Islamic Studies from Islamia College, Gujranwala, and went to Punjab Law College for an LLB degree in 1951 from The University of Punjab.
After serving as a jurist for a long time, he started his political career following his retirement at 65.
In January 1998, he became the president of Pakistan and reigned for 3 years until his resignation in June 2001.
