WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO GET A PS5?
“It is difficult for us to increase the production of the PlayStation 5 amid the shortage of semiconductors and other components,’ said Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki, according to Ars Technica.

According to Gaming Bolt, Sony is maintaining its ability to produce this many consoles for its eager fans.

SONY SOLD 4.5 MILLION CONSOLES IN TWO MONTHS
Sony sold 4.5million Playstation 5 consoles in the last two months of 2020.
The company released this impressive figure alongside its latest earnings report.

PS5 ‘LOST SONY MONEY’
PS5’s arrival, alongside strong software sales and 1.4million PS4 purchases, helped Sony’s gaming business make £6.1billion) in revenue for its latest quarter.
That’s an increase of 40 per cent over 2019.
However, Sony said the new console’s launch cut into the company’s profit gains.
Sony also revealed a dent from selling PS5 hardware at “strategic price points” for less than it costs the firm to manufacture.

4.5M CONSOLES SOLD – IN LESS THAN SIX WEEKS
It won’t surprise anyone looking at this blog to know the PS5 has sold very, very well.
Amazingly, Sony sold 4.5million of the consoles in 2020 alone – despite its November release date.
That’s the same amount sold of its predecessor, the PS4, when it launched in 2013.

A tech magazine has claimed there will be new stock at multiple retailers within a fortnight.
T3 says: “Expect retailers like Argos, Very, Smyths Toys, and the like to be dropping fresh bundles and standalone PS5 consoles in a fortnight”, .

PS5 ‘SOLD AT A LOSS’ FOR BIGGER GAINS
Entertainment giant Sony “opted to sell its new consoles at a loss”, reports Complex.
The website says that with “a nearly unprecedented demand for their current generation of consoles, Sony had the ability to set the price fairly high for the PlayStation 5”.
But, Sony’s “strategic price point of the PS5 was a way to undercut the Xbox console releasing around the same time.
“Sony’s gamble paid off, as the company more than made up for the loss leader with gaming sales and other entertainment revenue.”
This saw the giant rake in “a record $10 billion profit”, Complex adds.

PS5 CONSOLES BEING SOLD FOR OVER £700 ON EBAY
EBay sellers are trying to flog off PS5 consoles for more than £700, a check of the e-commerce website shows this morning.
There is a white, ‘brand new factory sealed’ Sony PS5 console at £700, while a disc edition is already up to £778.49.
This compares to the recommended PS5 retail prices of £449.99/$499.99, with the digital edition coming in at £359/$399 from Argos etc.

SONY STRUGGLING TO MEET PS5 DEMAND DUE TO ‘CHIP SHORTAGE’
Japanese electronics and media giant Sony Corp said it was struggling to keep up with pandemic-fuelled demand for the new PlayStation 5 amid a global shortage of semi-conductors.
Sony, which launched the PS5 in core markets November 2020, said last week that it expected to sell more than 7.6million consoles by the end of March – thanks to pent-up gamers hit by Covid lockdowns.
The shift to the new games console is also expected to encourage gamers to move to online downloads or subscription services, helping Sony boost the profitability of its gaming unit.
But Sony warned that it was struggling to match demand due to the chip shortage that has hurt production from businesses ranging from smartphone makers to car companies.
“It is difficult for us to increase production of the PS5 amid the shortage of semi-conductors and other components,” chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki told reporters.
