PLAYSTATION owners received a surprise free upgrade to one of all-time’s best games, providing a much smoother experience.

The upgrade comes completely free for PS5 and PS4 Pro owners who have purchased the game, but original PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox owners aren’t getting it.

The new patch makes action smoother for PS5 and PS4 Pro owners

Red Dead Redemption was patched on Wednesday with Update 1.03 for PS5 and PS4 Pro, which adds the option to play the game at 60fps.

This port of RDR for PS4 (and PS5 via backwards compatibility) and the Nintendo Switch launched back in August, but it was only playable at 30fps.

This frame rate, which is considered low by today’s standards, was met with disappointment by some fans of the game.

The new patch doubles the framerate of RDR by tapping into the PS5 and PS4 Pro’s capable hardware.

The upgrade to 60fps means smoother movement and sharper picture during action scenes, and an overall better and more responsive gaming experience.

When it launched on August 17, 2023, the new version of RDR for PS4 and Switch was met with mixed reactions.

Many fans were expecting more changes and improvements over the original game, which was released back in 2010 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Nevertheless, the release is just a simple port, rather than a remaster or a ground-up remake, despite its £40 price tag.

Today’s upgrade leaves behind PS4 and Nintendo Switch owners, who will be stuck playing the game’s new port at 30fps.

This is surprising and disappointing given the game’s age, as previous-gen consoles should be more than capable of running it at the higher framerate.

Xbox owners did not receive today’s upgrade, but Red Dead Redemption has been playable on Microsoft’s consoles even before the August 2023 re-release.

Thanks to backwards compatibility, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One owners can play the original version of RDR for Xbox 360.

On Xbox Series X, the game is playable at 4K resolution, but it’s locked at the original 30fps.

Because Xbox owners are using the original RDR release from 2010, they are not receiving the latest update.

Nintendo Switch were also left waiting, and the game’s port is still locked at 30fps on the platform.
