PRIMARK has suggested that it could start a click and collect service in the future, bringing online ordering to its customers for the first time.

The budget fashion retailer is due to launch its revamped website by the end of this month.

It will give users the opportunity to browse its 10,000 products, and will provide customers with almost real-time information on whether products are available in their local store.

At the moment, shoppers can only buy from Primark in its physical stores.

The brand has never offered home delivery, or any ordering via its website.

John Bason, finance director at Associated British Foods, which owns Primark, told news website Reuters that it was unlikely to ever offer home delivery as the cost to the business is too high.

“If there was an e-commerce opportunity for us, it will probably be more in the area of click and collect,” he said.

He did not give any more information about when click and collect could be introduced, or whether there would be a cost for the service.

Some retailers charge customers to order things which can later be collected in stores, while others offer the service for free.

When asked for further details about the plans, a Primark spokesperson said: “We’ve said before that a click & collect service could be a viable option for Primark if we can show it is the right thing for the business.

“We don’t rule anything out for the future, however our focus is on improving customers’ experience of Primark online and driving incremental footfall to our stores through the launch of our new website – starting with the UK later this month and rolling out to the rest of our markets into the autumn.”

The discounter’s current website shows a selection of its latest products and directs customers to their nearest store – but it won’t tell them if the item is in stock.

There is also an option to buy a gift card but shoppers are not able to place online orders.

But the new website should give shoppers much more information when it launches in the UK in the coming weeks.

Primark has 400 stores globally and nearly 200 in the UK.

It was particularly badly hit during the coronavirus lockdowns, when all stores had to close, as it couldn’t offer customers any alternative way of buying its products.
