Every month more than a million prize-winning Premium Bond numbers are chosen at random and two bond-holders pocket £1m each. Other prizes range from £25 to £100,000.
December 2023 update: Winners of the £1million prizes this month are based in York and Essex. While the York winner has a holding just shy of the maximum, at £49,976, someone in Essex is celebrating with a holding of a mere £14,600. Both jackpot winners bought their winning bonds within the last two and three years, which will no doubt anger the conspiracy theorists who believe newer bonds have more chance of winning. All Premium Bonds have an equal chance of a prize – now at 21,000 to 1.

The numbers, or more accurately strings of numbers and letters of varying lengths, are selected by a machine known as Ernie – Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment.
