Tata confirms shutdown that will affect many more jobs in south Wales community

The owner of Port Talbot steelworks has confirmed that the plant’s two blast furnaces will shut down, in what unions have described as a “crushing blow” that will cost about 3,000 jobs directly and many more in the south Wales community.

Port Talbot’s parent company, the Indian-owned Tata Steel, told workers’ representatives on Thursday that it could no longer afford to continue production at the loss-making plant while it completed a transition greener production.
