A POPULAR bakery chain is set to open new branches with drive-thrus.

Gail’s has announced that it has plans to open ten drive-thru bakeries.

Gail’s hopes to open the new bakeries within the next 12 months but it will need to secure new leases for spaces big enough first.

The bakery chain is currently searching for sites of between 2,000 sq ft and 4,000 sq ft with space for at least 20 cars across London and the South East.

The move will mean that drivers could soon be able to pick up loaves of sourdough, muffins and sausage rolls – all without leaving their vehicles.

Gail’s is yet to confirm if any specific locations have been chosen as potential sites for opening.

Tom Molnar, co-founder and chief executive of Gail’s said: “We are first and foremost a bakery, so it’s about the kitchen, and then if we have space for seating, we will add it in.

“We are always experimenting with new formats as it allows us to take advantage of different real estate opportunities that present themselves.”

But Gail’s, which has 100 branches in the UK, isn’t exactly the cheapest bakery on the high street.

A single sausage roll costs around £4 a piece.

Whereas Greggs shoppers can get a single sausage roll for just £1.45.

But the exact price you’ll pay for your baked goods will always depend on where you live.

Gail’s isn’t the only bakery opting to enhance its presence with drive-thru shops either.

Greggs was the first bakery giant to open drive thru stores back in 2017.

The bakery chain currently operates 15 drive thru shops in the following locations:

  • Saltbox Road, Bognor Regis
  • Westgate Retail Park, Slough
  • Allerdyce Court, Glasgow
  • Bonyrigg Road, Dalkieth
  • Sandy Lane, Newcastle
  • Southwell Road West, Mansfield
  • Meadowhall Retail Park, Sheffield
  • Gateway Service Station, Irlam
  • Port Road, Newport
  • Heol Waun Saggard, St Clears
  • Integra 61, Bowburn – Durham
  • Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire
  • Snetterton, Norwich
  • Frontier Park, Blackburn
  • North Bradley, Trowbridge

And Greggs has confirmed that it has plans to open more drive thru locations across the country.

Major US fast food chain Popeyes is opening seven new restaurants within weeks and one of these includes a brand new drive thru.

The New Orleans-style chicken shop already has 17 restaurants open across the UK and it has plans to open a further 20 outlets by the end of 2023.

Popeyes restaurants will soon spring up in locations including Cardiff, Plymouth, Richmond, Rotherham and Barrhead.

Rotherham will mark the brand’s first foray into drive-thru restaurants in the UK.

Last month, we revealed that McDonald’s fans drove for miles to visit the fast-food chain’s biggest drive thru in the country.

The chain’s Formby restaurant in Merseyside is the largest McDonald’s drive-thru in the country.

The restaurant opened back in 2019 and its popularity has seen its TikTok channel amass 6,404 followers.
