A POPULAR bakery chain has announced plans for a 24-hour drive thru service.

Greggs today said it was looking at trialling the service as it reported bumper sales for 2022.

It did not say when, or at what stores the service would run at.

Greggs does not currently operate any 24-hour drive thru branches.

Roisin Currie, chief executive officer, said the chain had plans to open another eight to 10 drive thrus in total this year.

Greggs already operates 15 across the UK, where customers can pick up the usual snacks from their car.

  • Allerdyce Court, Glasgow
  • Bonyrigg Road, Dalkieth
  • Sandy Lane, Newcastle
  • Southwell Road West, Mansfield
  • Meadowhall Retail Park, Sheffield
  • Gateway Service Station, Irlam
  • Port Road, Newport
  • Heol Waun Saggard, St Clears
  • Integra 61, Bowburn – Durham
  • Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire
  • Snetterton, Norwich
  • Frontier Park, Blackburn
  • North Bradley, Trowbridge

The drive thrus usually open around 6am and close around 9-10pm.

It comes after the chain said it was aiming to launch 150 new branches in 2023 after opening 186 last year.

It reported total sales of £1.5billion over 2022, a 23% increase on the £1.2billion reported in 2021.

“The significant opportunities on which the plan is based will remain centre stage in the year ahead as we make Greggs more accessible to even more customers.

“Although consumer incomes remain under pressure, Greggs continues to offer exceptional value to people looking for great tasting, high-quality food and drink on the go.”

It comes after Greggs axed hot cross buns from its menus before Easter.

In January, the chain caused fury when it hiked the price of its iconic sausage roll from £1.15 to £1.20.
