The gaming giant has given fans a first glimpse at a new handheld device, dubbed ‘Project Q’.

The device is designed for ‘playing games installed on your PS5 and streamed over WiFi,’ PlayStation explained in the description of a teaser video, posted on YouTube

Best of all, it won’t be long until you can get your hands on it.

Sony has confirmed that the Project Q device will be launching ‘later this year’.

The new device was announced in a blog last night.

‘Project Q [is] a dedicated device launching later this year that enables you to play any compatible game installed on your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi,’ Sony explained.

‘With a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen capable of up to 1080p resolution at 60fps, the device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you’re away from your TV.

‘All of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, are featured on the device.’

Project Q isn’t the only new device teased by Sony – the tech giant also gave a glimpse at its first-ever official wirelesss earphones.

‘Launching later this year, the earbuds will feature new wireless technology developed by [Sony], and will deliver lossless audio with low latency for a high-quality audio experience,’ Sony said.

While further details about both new devices – including the launch date and the price – are yet to be confirmed, many fans are already buzzing with anticipation.

‘Those ear buds look pretty slick. Hopefully the don’t cost a fortune,’ one user replied to the YouTube video.

‘The handheld made my jaw drop,’ another added, while one wrote: ‘The console is LIT!’

However, not everyone was so impressed, with many complaining that Project Q feels like a ‘step backwards’ from the PS Vita – a handheld console launched back in 2011.

‘The Q better be $150 max, anything higher than that and it’ll be absolutely impossible to sell,’ one sceptic wrote.

‘C’mon Sony, I get that it must be hard to want to try handhelds again after the Vita, but PlayStation is in a much better place in the post PS4 era.’

CAN VIDEO GAMES MAKE YOU LESS EMPATHETIC?

In a recent study, researchers looked at the three games participants played most, and noted if they were of a violent nature (such as shooting game Call of Duty) or non-violent (such as Fifa).

They tracked the brainwaves of participants using electroencephalography (EEG).

At the same time they completed a ‘stop-signal task’ which contained male and female faces looking either happy or scared.

The study found gaming was linked to lower empathy and emotional callousness.

Researchers believe this is because it inhibits people’s ability to process emotional facial expression and control their responses as a result.
