THE war between Xbox and PlayStation rages on, and a recent announcement has shocked the PS camp.
While Xbox is known as the more budget-friendly option for gamers, PlayStation can boast a huge number of popular series and exclusives.
Spider-Man, Horizon, God of War, and The Last of Us are all some of PlayStation’s most popular franchises, and they all come exclusively to PS consoles.
These blockbuster games are what makes PlayStation so attractive to players, making the recent announcement an even bigger shock to owners.
At an earnings briefing, Sony president Hiroki Totoki spoke about PlayStation’s focus on live-service games.
He also dropped a bombshell, stating: “Major projects are currently under development, [but] we do not plan to release any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year, like God of War Ragnarök and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.”

The company’s fiscal year starts and ends in April, meaning that we will not see a major first-party game until at least April 2025.
While these major titles will not be released, Sony still has major plans for its popular third-party games.
Totoki says: “We expect third-party software sales to continue to expand gradually due to the expansion of the PlayStation 5 install base and the high level of user engagement.”
Interestingly, he also mentions that he sees PS Plus to continue to do well, though sales may drop due to a recent price increase.

He explains: “In network services, we expect subscribers to be on par with this fiscal year or slightly less due to the impact of price revision we implemented in this fiscal year.
“But we expect sales to gradually expand due to a shift to attractive premium services.”
Many are disappointed by the lack of first-party games, but others are excited about the chance to catch up on their backlogs.
