TESCO customers are only just realising the supermarket is changing the way it collects points on fuel.

Shoppers will collect one point for every two litres of fuel, instead of one point for every £2 spent on fuel from June 14.

According to the RAC, the current average cost of a litre of unleaded petrol is currently 146.89p, so two litres costs roughly £2.93.

If prices stay the same, it means the majority of people will be getting less value from the Clubcard points when filling up their tanks.

The change excludes Esso filling stations at Tesco Express stores.

For Tesco Bank customers, the number of points you collect will depend on whether you use your card to collect points for fuel, to pay for fuel, or both.

A Tesco spokesperson previously told The Sun: “We are making a change to the way you can collect points when buying fuel at Tesco Petrol Filling Stations but rest assured that you can still benefit from Clubcard points every time you fill up with us.”

Tesco made the announcement on the points in early March, but some shoppers are only just realising.

One recently took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group saying he didn’t realise how much the change would impact the value of the points.

He said: “I knew the Tesco points were changing but it looks like my main reason for using Tesco petrol station is about to change too.

“Today I put £30 in the tank that gave me 15 points.

“£30 is only 20 litres so that will only mean 10 points when the change happens in June.

“I think June the 13th will be a busy day with everyone filling up before the change.”

It comes after the UK’s biggest supermarket announced it is reducing the value of Clubcard vouchers spent with reward partners.

From June 14, Clubcard vouchers will only be worth double their value if exchanged at any of Tesco’s reward partners – down from three times their value.

It means they won’t go as far as they used to at Alton Towers, PizzaExpress and Hotels.com.

The supermarket chain has also changed the name of the app to the Tesco Grocery and Clubcard app.

How does Tesco’s Clubcard work?

Tesco is one of a number of supermarkets that runs a loyalty scheme for customers.

Under the Clubcard scheme, shoppers earn points when they shop which can then be turned into vouchers to redeem online or in-store.

You get one point for every £1 spent and when scanning your card or the Tesco Grocery and Clubcard app.

You also get one point for every £2 spent on fuel, although this will change from June 14.

One point is equal to 1p, so 150 points gets you £1.50. You need a minimum of 150 points to request a voucher in the first place.

Tesco Clubcard customers can also get exclusive prices on a number of products in-store and online.

For example, you can get a meal deal for £3.40 with a Clubcard whereas it is £3.90 without one.

Sainsbury’s also lets customers rack up points when buying fuel through its Nectar Card.

Customers on the scheme can get one point per litre of fuel bought at an Esso garage.

They can also get two points for every pound spent on carwash or lubricant products at participating Esso branded service stations.

Meanwhile, Shell customers can use Shell Go to get money off at the operator’s forecourts.

Plus, BP and Texaco has their own loyalty schemes.
