PEOPLE are only just realising Tesco has changed its Clubcard points on fuel and it’s leaving them furious.

Shoppers collect one point for every two litres of fuel they put into their vehicles.

The supermarket changed the way its points work in June, when customers used to get one point for every £2 spent on fuel.

The change excludes Esso filling stations at Tesco Express stores.

For Tesco Bank customers, the number of points you collect will depend on whether you use your card to collect points for fuel, to pay for fuel, or both.

The current average cost of a litre of unleaded in the UK is 143.29p, according to the RAC, so two litres cost around £2.86.

That means the majority of people will be getting less Clubcard value when buying fuel.

Tesco made the announcement on the points in early March, but some shoppers are only just realising.

One recently took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group saying they didn’t realise the system had changed.

They said: “Noticed yesterday that if you use Tesco Clubcard on fuel they are changing the points to how many litres you put in now not £ spent.”

Other drivers were quick to comment, with one writing: “I filled up yesterday, 28 litres, 41 quid and only got 14 points! So are they giving half the points for the amount of litres? That’s annoying”

While another added: “Tesco Clubcard is no where near as good as it used to be.”

And a third wrote: “I didn’t know that! Thanks for sharing.”

A Tesco spokesperson previously told The Sun: “We are making a change to the way you can collect points when buying fuel at Tesco Petrol Filling Stations but rest assured that you can still benefit from Clubcard points every time you fill up with us.”

The UK’s biggest supermarket also changed the value of its Clubcard vouchers.

They are now only worth double their value if exchanged at any of Tesco’s reward partners – down from three times their value.

It means they won’t go as far as they used to at Alton Towers, Pizza Express and Hotels.com.

How does Tesco’s Clubcard work?

Tesco is one of a number of supermarkets that runs a loyalty scheme for customers.

Under the Clubcard scheme, shoppers earn points when they shop which can then be turned into vouchers to redeem online or in-store.

You get one point for every £1 spent and when scanning your card or the Tesco Grocery and Clubcard app.

One point is equal to 1p, so 150 points gets you £1.50. You need a minimum of 150 points to request a voucher in the first place.

Tesco Clubcard customers can also get exclusive prices on a number of products in-store and online.

For example, you can get a meal deal for £3.40 with a Clubcard whereas it is £3.90 without one.

Sainsbury’s also lets customers rack up points when buying fuel through its Nectar Card.

Customers on the scheme can get one point per litre of fuel bought at an Esso garage.

They can also get two points for every pound spent on carwash or lubricant products at participating Esso branded service stations.

Meanwhile, Shell customers can use Shell Go to get money off at the operator’s forecourts.

Plus, BP and Texaco have their own loyalty schemes.
