The best place to put your television set depends on your model.

You might want to sit closer or further away depending on the size of the screen.

But you’re also impacted by the resolution of the display – that’s the number of pixels that make up the image.

Sony says that you can sit much closer to a 4K TV for the best experience, for instance.

“The recommended distance for watching a 4K TV is 1.5 times the TV’s vertical screen size,” Sony explained.

“The naked eye can’t differentiate individual pixels when watching a 4K TV from this distance.

“This means that pixels effectively disappear when viewing 4K images.

“Thus, creating an impression of watching the image with the same detail and resolution as real life.”

The official list of TV sizes and recommended viewing distances is as follows:

  • 43-inch TV – 2.95 feet
  • 49-inch TV – 3.28 feet
  • 55-inch TV – 3.28 feet
  • 65-inch TV – 3.94 feet
  • 75-inch TV – 4.59 feet
  • 85-inch TV – 5.25 feet

If you’re watching a HD TV, you need to be further away to avoid seeing pixels.

According to Sony, the recommended distance is three times the TV’s vertical screen size.

Here’s Sony’s full list for HD models:

  • 22-inch TV – 2.59 feet
  • 26-inch TV – 3.25 feet
  • 32-inch TV – 3.92 feet
  • 40-inch TV – 4.92 feet
  • 43-inch TV – 5.58 feet
  • 46-inch TV – 5.58 feet
  • 49-inch TV – 6.23 feet
  • 50-inch TV – 6.25 feet
  • 55-inch TV – 6.92 feet
  • 60-inch TV – 7.55 feet

And if you’re watching a standard definition TV, Sony says the recommended distance is six times the TV’s vertical screen size.

That can be quite far, so you might want to consider upgrading your telly.
