Marks & Spencer has hired an ex-Tesco executive to head up its food arm. 

Alex Freudmann – who is managing director of Australian beer, wine and spirits retailer Dan Murphy’s – will take on the role of managing director of the High Street retailer’s food business on November 1. 

He will become part of M&S’s executive committee. 

He brings with him six years’ experience at Tesco in a variety of roles including senior buying manager for prepared meals.
