SAINSBURY’S is shaking up its Nectar card reward scheme to offer personalised discounts.
It comes after the success of Tesco’s revamped Clubcard points scheme.
Last month Boots also revealed changes to its Advantage Card which gives extra discounts to members.
My Nectar Prices will give shoppers money off the items they purchase most. Customers could bag discounts of up to 30% on their favourite items.
Sainsbury’s estimates that weekly customers could save more than £200 a year through the scheme.
My Nectar Prices will launch on September 22. To access the deals you’ll need the Nectar app, where you could view your personalised discounts.
But to get the discounts, you’ll have to use the self-scanner in the supermarket, known as SmartShop.
With SmartShop you scan your shopping on your smartphone as you go around the store. You can also use the in-store handheld scanners.
Customers pay for their shopping through the app or at a checkout.
Mark Given, chief marketing officer at Sainsbury’s, said: “What’s great about My Nectar Prices is that customers’ discounts will bet tailored to personally suit each shopper based on their previous shopping habits, meaning they will receive discounted prices on products they love and frequently use.”
The Nectar scheme was first introduced in 2002 to merge loyalty programmes of various retailers including Sainsbury’s, BP and Barclaycard. Sainsbury’s fully took over the scheme in 2018 and today it has around 18 million members.
This is not the first shake-up to the Nectar scheme. In 2018, the supermarket trialled a scheme where customers had to choose rewards in advance rather than earning points per pound spent.
More changes were introduced last year to improve the security of the scheme.
