According to DownDetector, more than 400 people have reported issues, with problems starting after 6am this morning.

Of those who complained of issues, 66% said they had problems making payments, 26% said they had online banking troubles while 8% said mobile banking had run into difficulties.

Customers have taken to social media to complain about the service issues – including problems receiving wages on pay day.

“Is there a problem with online money transfer into nationwide bank account? My payment hasn’t arrived this morning,” one customer tweeted.

While another said: “So there are payment delays at @AskNationwide again.”

One customer complained: “Sick of these payment issues now nationwide how long is it going to take this time.”

It’s not the first time Nationwide customers have been unable to pay bills or receive cash into their accounts.

Customers have been hit by a series of server fails over the past two months.

Many reported they were unable to send or receive payments on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

While last month, customers were hit by the same problems again.

A Nationwide spokesperson said: “There is currently a delay regarding faster payments as a result of a technical issue which we are working hard to resolve.

“Transactions are being temporarily queued while we get services back to normal and will be processed as soon as possible.”

It added that all other services are working and members can continue to use their cards to pay for goods and services and withdraw cash from ATMs.

The spokesperson added: “No member will be left out of pocket as a result of this issue and all associated Nationwide fees and charges will be refunded. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Will I get refunds for missed payments?

Unlike telecoms companies, banks do not have a fixed compensation scheme for service disruption, although depending on how much it has affected you, you may be entitled to some money back.

Nationwide promised customers that were hit by outages previously before Christmas that they would be refunded if they were charged any fees as a result of the crash.

Nationwide said customers will be refunded for any late fees they have incurred as a result of the crash.

It is worth gathering evidence of your problems so you can make a formal complaint to Nationwide directly.

Try to make a note of when you were unable to access the website or app, plus any costs you incurred as a result.

If your credit rating has been affected by a service outage, because you got a late payment fee after being unable to make a transaction, for example, you should also keep a record of this.

If you spoke to anyone to try and resolve the problem, make a note of their name and when you spoke to them, as well as roughly what you discussed and what they advised you to do.
