Can I make payments again on Nationwide?

Just days before Christmas, thousands of customers were left without cash on Tuesday, December 21, 2021

Nationwide account holders were unable to receive payments into their accounts.

The building society shared: “We are working hard to resolve the issue and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The payment failure began at 7am on December 21, 2021.

Customers began panicking on Twitter with worries they’ll be unable to receive their wages and buy lastminute gifts.

One furious user shared, “How can you possibly excuse no payments going in or out 4 days before Xmas! Inexcusable!

“You’ll be losing me as a customer once Xmas is out of the way!! Nationwide are a joke!”

Another person asked, “I am awaiting a payment. It has been sent. How long is this expected to last? Today is my only day to do my final shop before Christmas. Terrible timing no?”

The issue was finally resolved late on Tuesday, December 21, night, allowing all queued payments to eventually go through.

They tweeted: “Our Faster Payments issue has been fixed and all delayed payments have now been processed.

“Thank you for your patience and we’re sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused you.”

The Nationwide account advised customers to get in touch if they receive any charges.

However some customers have responded by saying their money still hasn’t landed into their account on December 22, 2021.

Why was Nationwide down?

The issue on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, meant payments in and out of accounts were affected.

A Nationwide spokesperson said of the glitch: “Unfortunately, there is currently a delay on outbound payments reaching people’s accounts as well as inbound payments reaching Nationwide current accounts.”

They added that customers were able to:

  • move money between Nationwide accounts
  • send money from your account(s), but this won’t go through straight away
  • use your cards online and in shops
  • log-in to our Internet Bank and Banking app
  • withdraw money at cash machines.

Nationwide tweeted that the issues were due to a “technical error”.

The service status was reportedly back to normal on Wednesday, December 22, 2021.

Will I get refunds for missed payments?

A Nationwide spokesperson said: “We apologise for the delays that members have experienced in sending and receiving faster payments.

“We will also refund all Nationwide charges and fees incurred as a result of this issue.”

More than 600 reports have been made on Downdetector so far, with problems occurring since 7am on Tuesday December 21.

Nationwide has promised to refund customers that were hit by outages yesterday, especially if they were charged for any late payment fees or similar.

The almost day-long hault of the building society’s services panicked Brits as they were left without wages and payment access just days before Christmas.
