NATIONAL Carers Week starts today, celebrating all aspects of their vital work.

During the pandemic, many of us have taken on extra responsibilities helping relatives and friends who are disabled, elderly or in need of support.

But with many of these roles unpaid and lockdown placing extra strains on finances, the help here could make a big difference . . .

SHOPPING AND BILLS: If you work in the care sector, Discounts For Carers offers you money off everything from shopping to bills. The service is free to sign up to and there are no fees down the line. See discountsforcarers.com.

CASHBACK CARD: Discounts For Carers also offers a pre-paid cashback card for employees in the care sector. The card is free for the first 12 months. An initial top-up of just £5 is required when you register, and after 12 months there is an annual fee of £2.99. The card can be used like any regular Visa debit card and you can earn up to 12 per cent cashback when shopping at more than 35 retailers, including Asda, Sainsbury’s, Primark, Nike, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose.

DAYS OUT: Now that the world is opening up more, it’s great to get out and about. The National Trust and English Heritage give free entry to carers or companions of disabled visitors. The disabled visitor needs to pay the normal admission or membership fee, and carers can avoid having to ask for free entry by applying for an Access for All Admit One Card in advance.

SHOW TIME: Carers can go to the cinema for free. Apply for a card from the Cinema Exhibitors’ Association which allows a disabled cinema customer to get a complimentary ticket for someone to go with them. When it comes to theatres, many also allow carers in for free. Check with the venue when booking to see what discounts are available.
