A BRAIN-RATTLING optical illusion has left internet users stumped.

The video shared on Reddit over the weekend showed fans leaving the San Siro stadium, which is home to Italian football clubs Inter Milan and A.C. Milan.

They’re walking down an enormous spiral walkway around the ground’s exterior that appears to be rotating on its axis.

However, the column is actually stationary and the spinning effect is a neat trick of the eye.

Reddit user u/MonsterJuiced shared the clip – which has gone viral online a number of times in the past – on Saturday.

The post on the website’s popular r/confusingperspective forum has racked up 14,000 upvotes.

The clip shows supporters leaving the San Siro via one of its many columns, creating a curious optical illusion.

The effect is created by everyone circling the structure in the same direction and at a similar speed.

With their legs obscured by the column’s walls, they appear as if they’re spinning as a result of the structure itself rotating.

Over on Reddit, users were left baffled by the illusion.

Another wrote: “Alright this one’s too hard, can somebody explain.”

Others commented to explain how the effect is created.

One wrote: “People are walking down this ramp. It appears therefore to be moving. It is not.”

Another said: “Everyone is walking the same direction, downwards. So the people technically are rotating, which makes it look as though the white corkscrew ramp is moving with them like a rotating escalator, but it’s not moving.”

Opened in 1926, the San Siro – or Giuseppe Meazza – has been renovated many times.

The 11 towers were installed in 1990 before Italy hosted the World Cup as part of its latest and most impressive update.

At each corner, the main supporting column rises to 51 metres and forms part of the arena’s unique look, aided by its beautiful Ragazzi-designed roof.

However, the site is not one football supporters are set to be able to enjoy for much longer.

Plans are in place for AC Milan and Inter to build a new stadium on the same site, meaning the existing San Siro is due to be demolished in the coming years.

In its place, a new 80,000-seater stadium is to once again play host to both teams. Plans for the project are to be finalised this year.
