BAFFLED shoppers have branded Matalan a shoplifters’ paradise after being told to remove their own security tags.

The clothing and homeware store is getting customers to take off the electronic devices themselves at self-service checkouts.

But punters believe it’s an open invitation for thieves.

One confused shopper said: “Why on earth would Matalan want customers to remove their own security tags?

“Doesn’t this completely defeat the point of having security tags on clothes?!”

Another wrote on Twitter: “It appears Matalan now have self service checkouts complete with magnetic tag remover for convenient shoplifting.”

A third added: “In @matalan you have to take the security tags off yourself. FFS!”

And a fourth customer also chimed in: “In @matalan you legit have to take off the security tags and everything!”

Matalan bosses began installing self-service checkouts in its branches after lockdown.

Shoppers must now scan their own barcodes and dispose of coat hangers in a slot.

A giant round magnet is also installed on the tills with a sign that reads: “Remove security tags here”.

The electronic tags and accompanying metal pins can then be dropped into another hole.

It comes as more than 100,000 signed a petition calling for the removal of self-service tills in Tesco. Disgruntled shoppers want to see the return of cashiers in the supermarket.

And Matalan customers feel the same.

Another angry punter raged: “The Matalan self service checkout makes ZERO sense???

“You’re making me scan, remove hangers, and security seals for FREE whilst an employee stands behind me telling me how to use the scanner?”

A second said: “Felt foxy in my outfit today until someone told me my jacket had the security tag still on. Couldn’t take it off quick enough.

“I blame self serve tills – Matalan give some people jobs you are minted.”

Matalan declined to comment.
