Average energy bills will jump by almost £700 a year next month, and rising food and council tax costs are also putting pressure on finances.

Martin highlighted the struggles of ill and disabled people, who often need to use more gas and electricity for their care.

He read out one viewers story on Good Morning Britain today, saying: “My husband is on oxygen 24/7 and a ventilator at night.

“Without the price increases we are already using £180 a month for gas and electric.

Martin said their bills could rise to £270 next month.

“My PIP has increased £3 but the council tax increase is £5 a month and my electricity is predicted to go up £70.

“I’m petrified as I don’t have another £70 a month. I don’t drink, I don’t have Sky.”

Martin urged the government to step in to help.

Speaking to health secretary Sajid Javid this morning he said: “People on oxygen concentrators, people on dialysis machines, people with electric wheelchairs, are in panic and shock that their lives are going to be cut off because of these energy rises.”

“Those are some of the most important people in our society and we should be doing everything we can to support them,” Mr Javid said in response.

Previously he said the government’s response will be kept “under review”.

What help is available if I’m struggling with my energy bills?

Your first step, if you’re struggling, should be to contact your energy supplier.

They may be able to change your payment plan or check if you’re eligible for their hardship fund.

For example, British Gas and Octopus have both set up funds to help customers who are struggling with their bills.

You should also check that you’re getting all the benefits you’re entitled to.

Use an online benefits calculator to make sure you’re not missing out on any extra cash.

Similarly, you can search for grants that can help you pay for gas and electricity bills.

There are government schemes available to help households pay for energy costs.

You might be eligible for the winter fuel allowance or cold weather payment if you already get other benefits.
